Believing passionately that the church is the assembly of believers gathered around the Gospel and the sacraments, Luther Memorial celebrates the Holy Communion every Sunday morning at 8:00 and 10:30, and also on other holy days throughout the church year. The Congregation embraces its location amid the campus of a great university, the consequent juxtaposition of faith and reason dynamically articulated in the grand tradition of the best Lutheran liturgical style, sacramental substance, architectural and musical beauty. Worship at Luther Memorial Church is challenging and rewarding, solemn yet joyful, a rich expression of both catholic substance and evangelical freedom. Those seeking Holy Baptism are invited to speak with one of the pastors.
"Jeans and jackets, ties and Ts, hats and ponytails; you'll find them all at LM." — new member
Music ranks second only to theology in the Lutheran tradition. Luther Memorial Church enthusiastically embraces a diverse wealth of classic sacred music. Blessed with an extraordinary Director of Music, Bruce Bengtson, the congregation rejoices in the wonder and beauty of the Word proclaimed through song, sound, rhythm, and ritual. Those interested are welcomed into the Luther Memorial Choir, Youth Choir, Children’s Choir, Training Choir, Bell Choir, Recorder Ensemble, and instramental ensembles. Festival Days are often punctuated by the sounds of strings, horns, and drums. "Singing in Bruce's choir is like playing basketball with Michael Jordan.” — adult choir member People sometimes refer to the Luther Memorial building as a “cathedral.” Since a cathedral must house a bishop’s chair (cathedra), Luther Memorial isn’t that. But it is more: a neo-gothic church built in classic cruciform (cross-shaped) style, our stone building proclaims the ancient yet ever-modern wonder of the crucified and risen Christ made mysteriously visible. The massive stone font and the imposing free-standing altar announce our common participation in the Living Lord, the grace and mercy of God for all the earth. Luther Memorial offers the opportunity for couples to hold their wedding at the church, regardless if they are members of the parish or not. See the wedding page for more information.
