Luther Memorial seeks to share the gospel by being Christ's hands on earth on annual mission trips and with a variety of local ministries. To those in need, a helping hand is truly "Good News."
Mission Trips
In the past few years, Luther Memorial members have served hurricane victims in New Orleans, inner city residents of Minneapolis, and rural families in Kentucky. Two trips to Kentucky are being planned for the end of July 2009. These trips provide opportunities for all ages to minister by helping low-income families in Appalachia with home repairs.
Local Outreach Ministries
Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN)
Luther Memorial is a host site for IHN, a program of The Road Home of Dane County. Four weeks per year, LM houses 3-4 homeless families in Sunday School classrooms. Members of LM and our "buddy" churches-Geneva and Christian Science-donate food for meals and volunteer to set up and clean up the classrooms, cook meals, play with children, do laundry, and stay overnight as hosts. LM has also participated in the Second Chance apartment program, providing home furnishings and mentoring to a family transitioning into permanent housing.
Oakwood Events
LM members gather at Oakwood Retirement Village every quarter for intergenerational events, such as hymn sings, ice cream socials, and Packer "tailgate" parties.
Student Brunches
LM hosts brunch for college students on the second Sunday of every month during the school year. We also host the Lutheran Campus Center's annual welcome banquet.
Christmas Gifts for Transitional Families
For several years LM members have participated in a program of the Madison Metropolitan School District to provide Christmas gifts to families that are or recently have been homeless. LM members buy, wrap, sort and deliver gifts to more than 15 families.
Savory Sunday
Savory Sunday cooks lunch on Sundays and serves it to homeless people. An LM member is a "captain" of this organization, and several members participate.
Meals on Wheels
Luther Memorial members deliver Sunday dinner on the Oakwood route four months a year.
